Representing the sun to the Zia people, it's four rays stretching in the cardinal direction, and guiding us to develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of others. 

The four spires also represent the four seasons, the four periods of the day, and the four stages of life (childhood, youth, middle years and old age).
